    Demographic characteristics 

    According to data from the last census of population and housing fund in the Republic of Bulgaria in 2011, 15 358 people live in Kavarna municipality at that year[1]. By this indicator the municipality falls in the category of small municipalities (with population up to 30 000 people). The average population density is 31.9 people/ square km. For the past ten-year period between the two censuses (2001 and 2011) the population of the municipality decreased from 16 688 people to 15 358 people or by 1330 people[2].

     

    In terms of age structure the population of Kavarna municipality is characterized by more favorable proportions between the main age groups in the urban population and by disrupted structures in the rural population (data from census in 2011), as the latter is manifested in reducing the young population in many small villages as a result of internal and external migration movements.

     

    The educational structure of the population in the municipality is the following (as at 2011): people with higher education - 11.9 %; people with secondary education– 37.1 %; people who never attended school - 2.9 %. In ethnical terms the population of Kavarna municipality (as at 2011) consists mainly of people who identify themselves as Bulgarians 77.6 %, 4.3 % belong to the Turkish ethnic group, Roma account for 15.1 % of the people who have identified themselves in terms of ethnicity.
