    Flora and fauna

Kavarna municipality is rich in plant and animal species. It is predominated by deciduous forests consisting of Carpinus orientalis, Quercus cerris, Fraxinus ornus, Fraxinus angustifolia (narrow-leafed ash), summer oak, Quercus frainetto (Hungarian oak or Italian oak), Quercus pubescens (white oak) and others. 40 % of the forest fund consists of artificially created forest belts of Quercus cerris, Quercus frainetto, Fraxinus excelsior, Gleditsia triacantha L., Acacia, Acer platanoides L., maple, sycamore, walnut and others. The fauna is represented by typical steppe species such as common vole, forest and domestic mice. The rabbit is important for hunting. There are also species of mole-rat, European ground squirrel and common vole. Of interest are otter, wild cat, colorful and steppe polecat. All are listed as endangered species on the European continent. In the Red Book of Bulgaria are included the owl, long-legged buzzard and a number of endangered reptiles that inhabit the cliffs of e Kaliakra Cape. Of the larger species the following can be enumerated: red dear, fallow deer, roe deer, mouflon, wild boar, fox and others. Representatives of the birds are partridge, Mongolian pheasant, Alectoris graeca, common quail, common wood pigeon and others[1].

In the region and in particular north of Kaliakra Cape there are two separate small wetlands – Bolata and Taukliman (Birds Bay). Some of the birds nesting in them are: little bittern, little grebe and ducks. Their number and diversity increase during migration, when more than 150 bird species stop to rest and eat[2].

The diversity of natural conditions and resources in Kavarna municipality provides sufficient potential for the development of both traditional and alternative forms of tourism and recreation.
