    Relief

Balchik municipality is situated on the territory of Dobrudzha geomorphologic region (Balchik –Franga geomorphologic subregion)[1]. It should be specified that in geographical terms its territory falls within two regions: coastal and Dobrudzha Plateau.

The coastal region has an altitude of 150 m and covers the coastal line and Batova River Valley. The coastal line is slightly indented; near the river mouth it is low, but with a vast sandy beach of 270 000 square meters, including also the extensive wooded lowland Baltata. In the east the coast is higher and, though terraced by landslide, it remains accessible.

Dobrudzha Plateau, on the other hand, has a height of 150-250 m above sea level, with predominantly slightly hilly terrain[2].

The coast section between the town of Balchik and the port of Kavarna is built of Sarmatian clay and marl deposits. Due to their specificity, they are susceptible to easy erosion by flowing water and breaking waves. As a result, the coast has many landslides, different in form, with slopes with a reverse slope, with pseudoterraces and loose inclined layers[3].
