Brief geographical characteristics
The municipality of Shabla is located in northeastern Bulgaria on the border with the Republic of Romania. It occupies an area of 329,6 square kilometers in Dobrich district. It borders the municipalities of Kavarna (southwest) and General Toshevo (west), the Black Sea to the east and Romania to the north. Through its territory passes the first-rate road І-9 (European categorization Е-87), which come from Romania (point of entry in the country at Durankulak border checkpoint) and carries the international tourist flow to the interior of the country, the Black Sea Coast and, through Malko Tarnovo border checkpoint, south to Turkey and Asia[1].
The municipal center is situated at 587 km from Sofia and at 81 km from Varna.
The municipality of Shabla possesses rich potential for tourism development, which is predetermined by the salt lake-lagoon Shablenska Tuzla, three freshwater lakes: Shabla Lake, Ezerets Lake and Durankulak Lake, thermal mineral springs and biodiversity. Surely, an important resource for tourism is the sea and the opportunities to practice both traditional and alternative recreational activities. The beaches of the municipality (Durankulak, Shabla and Krapets) cover a common area of 318 000 square meters. They, together with the preserved sand dunes and hot mineral springs, are an attractive resource for many tourists.
