    Demographic characteristics 

     

    In early 2011, when the last census of population was conducted in the Republic of Bulgaria, 5 069 inhabitants lived in the municipality of Shabla. But according to estimates of the National Statistical Institute, drastic reduction in the number of inhabitants is expected, while maintaining the current trends of demographic collapse.

     

    The inhabitants of the town of Shabla comprise 68 % of the total population; the other 32 % of the inhabitants of the municipality live in the villages. As a whole, the structure of population of the municipality is balanced by gender: women comprise 51 % of the population, 49 % are men. However, studied by age, the population is characterized by a significant proportion of aging population – about 60 %.

     

    The inhabitants of the municipality of Shabla are people with education: 10 % have higher education, 42 % secondary education and 11 % primary education.

     

    The ethnic structure of the population is dominated by people who identify themselves as Bulgarians – 93 %; Roma comprise 3 % and 67 individuals belong to the Turkish ethnic group.
